Fireflies

Over the last few weeks each evening, we have had a handful of fireflies flying around outside our front door. Each evening I would be captivated by them and I would watch them intently as they fluttered around outside and occasionally tried to get in. Even though there were only a few, their light would get my attention and I would get a sense of contentment watching them.

As I pondered the relatively small light that was given off by the fireflies and what drew me to observe them it made me pause and consider the many bible passages that refer to light, in particular the verse in John 8:12 where Jesus refers to himself as the light of the world. “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

As a follower of Jesus I have His light inside of me but what am I doing with this light? Am I shining brightly like the fireflies outside my home as I interact with my neighbours and is this light inside me causing them to see Jesus in me as Matthew 5:16 encourages us to do when he says “in the same way, let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Or do I feel discouraged by how insignificant I think my light is in the spiritual darkness of Thailand?

The fireflies, even though so few in number were able to get my attention by their light. Why do I doubt that God can use me and His light shining out of me to draw people to Him? May the fireflies example live on in me as I strive to shine brightly for Jesus so that His light in me will attract my Thai neighbours and friends to be drawn to Jesus.
