“Why English teaching?” some may ask. Does it really make a spiritual impact in the lives of people? Is it really in line with God’s kingdom work? One of our prayers during this initial stage of establishing student ministry is that we may create a presence and build relationships through meeting felt needs – and one of the biggest needs among Thai university students right now is to learn English. English teaching doesn’t sound as spiritually glamorous as door-to-door evangelism or preaching the gospel to the masses, yet God can still work through it in ways that surprises us!
Tonight my family was invited to take part in an English Club with the School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University. After introductions, there was an evening meal provided. My wife brought along a Korean dish for everyone to try, which turned out to be quite popular! There was plenty of casual conversation, followed by a few icebreaker games that we had prepared for the young faculty and students who attended. Before we ended the night, one of the young professors came up to me and asked if I can play the guitar and sing a song for everyone. Apparently, someone had brought along a guitar, and they wanted me to perform on the spot!
The only song that came to mind was the praise song, "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever." And so I said sure and agreed to perform for everyone. I prefaced the song by sharing why my family and I are here in Thailand. As Christians, we believe that God loves us and sent His Son Jesus Christ to take our place as sinners. We love the Lord and want to share His love with others as well. And then I played and sang and praised...
Your river runs with love for me,
And I will open up my heart
And let the healer set me free.
I'm happy to be in the truth,
And I will daily lift my hands:
For I will always sing of when
Your love came down.
I could sing of your love forever,
I could sing of your love forever,
I could sing of your love forever.
I could sing of your love forever.
It's foolishness I know;
But when the world has seen the light,
They will dance with joy,
Like we're dancing now.
